Ion channel modulation and the control of neuronal excitability. We study how the regulation of ion channel function initiates fundamental behaviours. Our focus is a group of neuroendocrine cells that trigger reproduction through a prolonged afterdischarge and release of peptide hormones. Electrophysiology, imaging, and molecular biology are used to examine how acetylcholine receptors, non-selective cation channels, and voltage-gated calcium channels control excitability and secretion. The work we undertake shows how neuronal and animal behaviour can be altered for extended periods following brief sensory input.
