The Program

Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Council Manual - pdf

Physiology offers the graduate degrees of Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in our program field Physiology of Human Disease. Normally, students begin with the MSc degree program, which is typically completed in eighteen to twenty-four months. The PhD program usually requires an additional two years. However, well-qualified and productive students may proceed directly to the PhD program, subject to an evaluation of their initial progress. Both degrees are based largely on experimental work. Course work is tailored to the student’s background and requirements. Completion of either degree program requires a defense of a thesis based on research.

Course Requirements

MSc students are required to take a minimum of two full-course credits and may be required to take additional courses depending on their background or requirements of their Supervisor. Of these credits, the program currently requires that all incoming MSc students enroll in PHGY810 and PHGY897.  Additional courses to meet graduation requirements are to be chosen in consultation with your Supervisor. A complete list of the graduate courses offered in Physiology are listed here: http://www.queensu.ca/calendars/sgsr/Physiology.html  but students are free to enroll in courses offered through other Departments if they are appropriate for their specific program.

PhD students are not formally required to take courses but may be encouraged to do so depending on the student’s background. PhD students are required to pass a comprehensive examination, usually within the first year of their program.

Both MSc and PhD students are required to participate in a limited amount of teaching for which they are paid, as a part of their training.
