1:00 - 2:00pm

Dr. Liz Girolami was born and raised in Montreal. Her background is in Biology and most recently, a PhD in Neuroscience from McGill University. In the midst of finishing her graduate studies, Liz had her son Nico; defending her thesis while pregnant with their second child. She holds a strong belief that a woman in the academic/scientific community in this day and age is fully capable of managing a family while launching their career. For several years following graduation, Liz balanced her work and family life through working part-time as a freelance medical/scientific editor, completing contracts for both the private and public sector; including several writing contracts for the Tobacco group in the Controlled Substances Directorate of Health Canada. In the past year, she has started working full-time as a Scientific Evaluator in the Central Nervous System Division of the Therapeutic Products Directorate of Health Canada. In her “spare” time between managing work and her family, Liz enjoys teaching and dancing hip hop, and embarking on anything creative; including ventures such as designing the Badass Mom Clothing line for the San-Francisco-based company Betabrand.

Dr. Michael Haber has a background in Physiology, a Graduate Certificate in Biotechnology, and a MSc and PhD in Neuroscience from McGill University. In 2009, he joined the Pest Management Regulatory Agency of Health Canada where he worked with agricultural stakeholders across Canada in the prioritisation of crop protection needs. In 2011, he moved to the Health Products and Food Branch where he works as a reviewer, evaluating the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical drug submissions for the Central Nervous System Division. He is also responsible for a number of innovation projects that complement the submission review process and contribute to modernising Good Review Practices at Health Canada. In his spare time, Mike enjoys spending time with his family, playing soccer, cooking, and reading.

"Jobs for Science Graduates at Health Canada: Our Stories"

It is generally expected that as a science graduate student, you will pursue one of two options upon graduating; an academic career or, alternatively, a job in the private sector, most likely in the Pharmaceutical field. Dr. Mike Haber and Dr. Liz Girolami look forward to presenting a third, equally tantalizing possibility; that of a science career at Health Canada. As Neuroscience grads, both Mike and Liz were, like many other graduates out there, initially unsure what career would be best-suited for them. However, both are currently pursuing careers as Scientific Evaluators at Health Canada and are incredibly happy with the path they have chosen. They look forward to sharing their individual stories with you, telling you more about their work, and answering any questions you may have about jobs for Science graduates at Health Canada.
