He is the current Chair of the Committee to Evaluate Drugs of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, an expert advisory committee on optimal drug utilization for the province of Ontario.
His clinical and research interests include guideline development, antimicrobial pharmacology, sexually transmitted infections; particularly genital herpes, respiratory tract infections, antifungal therapy and infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus.
Research Interests:
- Clinical Trials of Investigational Antimicrobials
- Antimicrobial Pharmacology
- Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT)
- Epidemiology of Human Infectious Diseases
- Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP)
- Human Herpesvirus Infections
Details of Research Interests:
As an Infectious Disease physician, I am actively involved in clinical trials of new antimicrobials for use in the treatment of human infectious diseases. I have a particular interest in the antimicrobial therapy of community-acquired pneumonia and human herpesvirus infections. In collaboration with other clinical colleagues in Infectious Diseases here at Queen's we are pursuing studies in the epidemiology of tuberculosis, infective endocarditis, human staphylococcal infections including bone and joint infections and CAPD peritonitis, and risk factors for CAP. We are participating in an international project examining the management of patients on ambulatory parenteral antibiotic therapy, an emerging strategy for treating patients outside of the hospital setting. In collaboration with colleagues in pharmacy we are examining the importance of antimicrobial pharmacokinetics and other parameters on the efficiency of delivering antibiotic therapy outside the hospital setting.
