Performance in three areas will be evaluated
1. Preparedness and participation (30%); students must prepare for each class by thoroughly reading the assigned papers in advance and participate in class discussions. Student participation will be evaluated by the quality of comments and questions posed/answered during class discussions.
2. Presentation (30%); Each student as part of a team of 3 will lead the discussion of an assigned paper using a “journal club” format on two occasions. Performance will be based on demonstrating a)an understanding of the topic, b)the strengths and limitations of the paper, and c)an ability to elicit class participation.
3. Final exam (40%); the final exam will use an oral format consisting of a 10 minute presentation of an assigned article followed by 15 minute Q&A. Students will have the option of working individually or in teams of 2. Performance will be be based on one's ability to critically evaluate an article, assimilate background information, interpret results, and assess the importance of the findings (20%). Performance on Q&A will be evaluated individually if part of a team (20%).
