Dr. Susan Boehnke is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences and the Centre for Neuroscience Studies at Queen’s University. Following undergraduate studies in Psychology and Biology at the University of Guelph, she completed an MSc in Experimental Psychology and a PhD in Neuroscience at Dalhousie University, followed by postdoctoral training in primate visual and oculomotor neurophysiology with Doug Munoz at Queen’s University.
Publications are available via her Google Scholar profile.
Her research spans behavioural neuroscience, neurophysiology, and neuroimaging, with interests in sensory processing, eye movements, neurodegenerative disease, and social neuroscience. She currently co-leads an interdisciplinary study examining how social experience influences brain structure and function through neuroimaging, physiological biomarkers, and behavioural approaches. She is a founding member of Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society, a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) initiative jointly led by York and Queen’s Universities, and served as inaugural Lead of its Training Committee.
Dr. Boehnke directs the Neurotech Discovery Lab, an experiential research and training environment where students and trainees design and execute interdisciplinary neuroscience projects using technologies such as EEG, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), motion capture, and neuromodulation. Her work emphasizes translating neuroscience research into responsible real-world neurotechnology applications through interdisciplinary collaboration and experiential training. She is Founder and Director of the provincially funded Neurotech Microcredential Program, an interdisciplinary initiative that prepares students and professionals for emerging careers in neurotechnology while emphasizing responsible innovation, ethics, and societal impact.
At Queen’s, she teaches NSCI 483: The Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (Fall and Winter), NSCI 444: Controversies in Neuroscience, a neuroethics-focused seminar (Winter), and DISC 598/599: Discovery Lab Research Project, a full-year experiential course in which interdisciplinary student teams design and execute original research projects. Through this program, Dr. Boehnke supervises approximately 15 senior undergraduate researchers annually in the Neurotech Discovery Lab.
