Dr. Jerome A. Dempsey was born and raised in London, Ontario and educated at Western University, the University of Alberta and University of Wisconsin. Over six decades he and his colleagues at the Rankin Laboratory of Pulmonary Medicine, UW-Madison have researched and taught cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, published 420 peer-reviewed manuscripts with >43,000 citations, received continuous NIH funding (1970-2020), established an NIH-sponsored specialized Center of Research into sleep apnea and supervised the training of 68 pre-and post-doctoral fellows.
Noted discoveries in humans and animal models include elucidating the mechanisms underlying control of breathing, respiratory muscle work and fatigue, and cardiopulmonary interactions during sleep, exercise and hypoxia in health and cardio-respiratory diseases; respiratory limitations to exercise performance; and study of the pathogenesis, consequences and epidemiology of sleep disordered breathing, including being a founding member of the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort, the first cohort to report the prevalence of sleep-disordered breathing and the consequences of sleep apnea to hypertension and mortality.
Jerry resides in Madison, Wisconsin, USA with his wife, Barbara Morgan, daughter Pamela, son Ben, and granddaughter Bridget.
