CIHR Early Career Award in Cancer Prize- Dr Sheela Abraham

Congratulations to DBMS faculty member Dr Sheela Abraham on being awarded the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Early Career Award in Cancer Prize!

This award is given by the CIHR Institute for Cancer Research to the top ranked cancer grant in the project grant competition (in this case, the fall 2020 competition). The $25,000 award will provide further support to build Dr Abraham's exciting research on hematopoietic stem cells, extracellular vesicles, aging and leukemia.

PhD Students Olivia Giovannetti and Diane Tomalty Awarded Research Grant Funding from ISSWSH

Olivia Giovannetti and Diane Tomalty, two PhD students, supervised by Dr. Michael Adams, have successfully applied for and received research grant funding from the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health (ISSWSH). The ISSWSH Scholars in Women’s Sexual Health Research Grant Program offers young investigators interested in research in women's sexual health the opportunity to obtain funding from ISSWSH to support their research

Lead author Julia Segal (DBMS PhD candidate) reports the latest from Nader Ghasemlou's lab on how experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) models can be improved to study chronic pain. This is a major issue for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), and this research will help inform on MS treatments in the future.

MO: Our ATVB paper was largely the product of Anne Theilmann’s efforts, with support from Dr. Lindsey Hawke and Rhiannon Hilton (PhD Candidate, Experimental Medicine) in the Ormiston Lab, among others. Anne was an MSc student in Experimental Medicine from 2017-2019 and is currently in her 2nd year of Medical School at UBC. In addition to BMP signaling, Anne enjoys Marvel movies, figure skating and coffee. This work wouldn’t have been possible without support from our colleagues at Queen’s, Drs. Don Maurice, Paula James and Stephen Archer.

Dr. Amber Simpson appointed as Director, Human Mobility Research Centre, Queen’s University & Kingston Health Sciences Centre

On the recommendation of Deans Jane Philpott, Kevin Deluzio, and Barbara Crow, Mark Green, Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic) at Queen’s University and of David Pichora, CEO at Kingston Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Amber Simpson has been appointed Director of the Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC). Her appointment is effective September 1, 2020, and is for a five-year term.

Five DBMS Researchers Awarded CIHR Funding

Seven members of the Faculty of Health Sciences, including five from Department of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences, have been awarded with a total of $5.76 million in funding from the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), Canada’s federal agency for funding health research. The CIHR Project Grants are designed to support researchers at any career stage build and conduct health-related research and knowledge translation projects.
