NSCI 401 - Introduction to Theoretical Neuroscience Fall 2024 (Online) Year 4 3-4 hours/week 3 units Available On-Campus Course Online Course This course will provide an introduction to the main modelling approaches and theoretical concepts in Neuroscience. The computational anatomy of the brain and how it implements perception, learning, memory, decision making and motor control, among other topics, will be discussed. Prerequisites Minimum 4th year (Level 4) standing, registration in a LISC/BHSc Major or SSP, a GPA of 2.5, and one of (STAT 263/3.0; STAT 267/3.0; STAT 367/4.0; COMM 162/3.0; ECON 250/3.0; PSYC 202/3.0; SOCY 211/3.0; BIOL 243/3.0; CHEE 209/3.0; GPHY 247/3.0; KNPE 251/3.0; POLS 285/3.0; NURS 323/3.0; STAM 200/3.0; HSCI 190/3.0). Learning Outcomes Students will learn to understand and interpret fundamental models in neuroscience. They will also learn to appreciate the value of quantitative models in understanding brain function. Practical skills learned include critical thinking, research paper presentations and hands-on modeling of select phenomena Evaluations Short opinion essay: 10% Written report of team-based learning projects: 2 x 15% (30% total) Oral in-class paper presentation: 20% Weekly written paper summaries: 10% Final written exam (short/long answers): 30% Time Commitment Lecture 3 hours per week Grading Method Letter Grade Percentage A+ 90-100 A 85-89.9 A- 80-84.9 B+ 77-79.9 B 73-76.9 B- 70-72.9 C+ 67-69.9 C 63-66.9 C- 60-62.9 D+ 57-59.9 D 53-56.9 D- 50-52.9 F 0-49.9
